The needle is automatically retracted directly from the patient into the barrel of the syringe when the plunger handle is fully depressed. The pre-removal, automated retraction greatly reduces exposure to the contaminated needle, effectively reducing the risk of needlestick injury.

According to a leading COVID-19 vaccine maker, using a syringe with a dead space of 35 microliters or less allows access to an additional dose from a 5-dose vial.
